About

As well as a playwright Anton is a writer of biography and crime fiction. His new book, Portraying Elizabeth, is published in June 2020, a study of depictions of Queen Elizabeth I, including interviews with Glenda Jackson, Dame Eileen Atkins, Dame Harriet Walter and Miranda Richardson.

Other forthcoming work includes his first crime novel, and the play Lady Mosley’s Suite, read at the Trafalgar Studios with Patricia Hodge and Emilia Fox in the lead roles.

Bette & Joan ‘Anton Burge’s shrewd, lively writing subtly expands our perception of the two women as the piece unfolds. He doesn’t deconstruct what we might think we already know about the feud, but he does deepen it, revealing the strange correspondences and connections in Crawford’s and Davis’s experiences and fleshing out their characters.

Storm in a Flower Vase feels like a TV drama: it’s not just the short scenes, or the fact it breezes through several years in a couple of hours, it is its intimacy, its close-up on an individual’s inner life. The play is the story of Constance Spry, celebrated floral decorator. To the uninitiated, not an obvious page-turner. Yet in the hands of writer Anton Burge it becomes one.

Anton is represented by The Artists Partnership and his plays are published by Samuel French at Concord Theatricals.
